Quick Tips for Instructors: About student laptops...

  • The network team performed a lot of work during summer 2005 to improve the wireless coverage across campus. By the start of classes, the wireless network will be accessible in all academic buildings.
  • To ensure your classroom will accommodate any wireless needs you may have & that you are comfortable using the available technology in the classroom, arrange a time for one of the FITS staff members to meet with you & pre-test it before the start of the semester. (Contact Carol Smith: clsmith@depauw.edu)

  • If you are using the students' laptops in a class, FITS staff is available to come to your classroom(s) during the first time or two. If there are other ways that they might be able to assist, please dont hesitate to ask! (Contact Carol Smith: clsmith@depauw.edu)
  • Review the suggestions from the Academic Technology Advisory Committee (ATAC) about suggestions that they recommend faculty members consider in light of the laptop initiative.
  • We are leaving Perfigo turned off at the start of the semester. We will re-implement this utility at some later in the year, but decided it would be simpler for the students arriving with laptops to not have it running on the network yet at this point.
  • There are scheduled student laptop setup and software installation tables at several times during the next three weeks. You can find the schedule and locations of these tables at http://www.depauw.edu/it/helpdesk/install_table.asp.
  • Recommended software for students:
    • Students who purchased Dell program laptops have program software (including Microsoft Office, Macromedia MX Suite, and Symantec Antivirus) already installed on their machines. The price of the software was bundled into their laptop order.

Note: There is a patch needed on the Dell D610's that resolves problem with Microsoft Office when you create a Windows profile. Students can download the patch from the Helpdesk Downloads page.
    • Students who purchased Macintosh program laptops will need to pick up a CD from the Helpdesk or at one of the software installation tables. A charge of $169 for the software package will be added to their accounts.
    • Additional software that the students will need when they arrive on campus can be downloaded from the Helpdesk Downloads page.

  • Please report any issues with the wireless network or classroom technology tools to the Helpdesk (x4294, helpdesk@depauw.edu ).
