Wireless 101

You can connect to DePauw’s wireless network from almost anywhere on campus. Here are a few things you should know about wireless:

Connection Speed:

Nominal wireless speed is 11 Mbps. To put this in perspective, if you connect to a wired LAN connection, your connection speed is nearly 100 Mbps. And, the further you are from the wireless router, the slower your connection. You can monitor your signal strength by navigating your mouse over the green bar icon on the Task Bar at the bottom of the screen in Windows.

Battery Power:

If you are accessing wireless while running on your laptop’s battery, you will significantly decrease your battery life. This is especially true if your laptop does not have internal wireless and you are using an external wireless card.

Interference:

Certain electronic devices, such as portable phones and microwave ovens, can interfere with your wireless connection.
