DePauw Wordpress blog Help Guide

To set up a Wordpress login or request a new blog, please email michaelgough@depauw.edu.

This job aid is intended to provide a high level overview of how to blog using Wordpress.

Wordpress is a blog administration system used at DePauw University.  Wordpress works best with the Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.1 or later browser.  To download Firefox for free, visit http://www.depauw.edu/it/helpdesk/downloads or http://www.mozilla.com/firefox .

1.  To update content on your blog, login to your account.

2.  Browse to: http://yourusername.wordpress.depauw.edu/and enter your:

3.   When logged in, the Dashboard screen appears in the active window.

  •   In addition to your latest activity, the Write, Manage, Plug-ins, Users, and Options links appear.
  • The View Site link which appears next to the blog’s name on the Dashboard screen also allows access to menu options in a different view. 

4.  Click the “Write” link in the light blue menu bar at the top.

5.  Enter a title for your post in the Title field

  • If desired, assign a category to the post by adding a category and then selecting it from the Category list on the sidebar menu.
6.  Type your post or copy and paste it from a Word document
  • Remember to click the “Save” button often to save your progress as you are working on your entries!

7.  Format by:

  • Highlighting your text and clicking on one of the format buttons.
  • Bold, Italicize & Underline will format the text similar to typical Word formatting by inserting HTML code which can be viewed by clicking the HTML button under the Post sub-menu.

8.  If you want to insert a link then type the URL in the body of the post, highlight it, click the link symbol, and then click update.


 

9.  If you want to remove a link then highlight the URL in the body of the post and click the broken link symbol next to the link symbol.

10.  If you want to include an image then click the Browse button under the “Post” section and navigate to the image that you want to upload. 

  • Under the Post section, if you click Browse all then all of the pictures that have been uploaded to your blog will be shown.
  •  Next select your image and click Upload

11.  Give your picture a Title

12.  Provide details about the image in the Description section.

13.  If you want to include an Audio or Movie file:

  • Enter a Title
  • Click on the appropriate button.
14.  Enter the full URL of the audio or movie file and click OK.

15.  If you plan to:

  • Continue writing or making changes,
  • Then click Save and Continue Editing.
16.  If you are finished posting then click Save then click Publish.
