Biographical Sketch of Elijah E. Edwards

Elijah Edwards was born 26 January 1831 in Delaware, OH. He received his A.B. in 1853 from Indiana Asbury University and in 1854 married Mrs. Alice Eddy. He received his A.M. in 1856 from McKendree College, Lebanon, Illinois and from 1856-1858 was president of Whitewater College, Centerville, Indiana. From 1861-1864 he was pastor at Hudson, Wisconsin and during the latter part of the Civil War he was Chaplain of the 7th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. In 1877 he received an Honorary Ph.D from Indiana Asbury University. From 1879-1882 he was the first president of the Colorado State Agricultural College, now Colorado State University, and from 1886-1888 was president of the St. Croix Dalles Institute. In addition, Elijah Edwards held many other positions, a large number of which were religious. His wife died in 1896 and three years later he married Mrs. Ellen Tingley. He died 10 November 1915.

The collection consists of diaries, illustrations, poems, letters and articles by and about Elijah Evan Edwards, including his life as a student at Indiana Asbury University, his military service as a Chaplain in the Civil War, and his term as the first president of Colorado State Agricultural College, now Colorado State University. Illustrations consist mainly of pen and ink sketches of student life at Indiana Asbury University and army life during the Civil War. Portions of the diaries are copies of originals held by Colorado State University and the Minnesota Historical Society. Series I is concerned with the Edwards Family and E.E. Edward's years at Indiana Asbury University. Series II is concerned with his involvement in the Civil War and his Presidency of Colorado State Agricultural College. Series III contains poems, letters, sketches, journals and articles by or about E.E. Edwards from 1846-1910. The Civil War Diaries were written by E.E. Edwards many years after the war and were based on letters to his wife, letters for publication in local papers, and sketches from his pocket diary. See DC 93, folder 5, for detailed information regarding the Civil War diaries.
