Historical Sketch
In the Fall of 1951, Major Robert E. Whaley USAF, who then was Commandant of Cadets of the 470th Cadet Air Wing, University of Omaha, formed in conjunction with leading coeds from Omaha University's social organization the first Angels' Flight, known as the Sponsor Corps. The coeds who were selected for membership during the first year in the Sponsor Corps, which later became the national organization known as Angel Flight, are today the charter members of this national organization. The idea for an Angels' Flight spread rapidly. By the Fall of 1954, there were seventeen Flights, including those at Drake, Miami University, San Francisco State, and the Universities of Connecticut, Utah, Minnesota, Indiana and Iowa. The purpose was to further the mission tradition, and concepts of the United States Air Force by creating a more effective relationship between the community, the university and the corps of AFROTC cadets through public relations activities and assisting in the campus activities of the corps.
