Historian Charles A. Beard was born 27 November 1874 in Knightstown, Indiana. He died 1 September 1948 in New Haven, Connecticut. He graduated from DePauw in 1898, where he also received his master's degree in 1903. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia in 1904. Beard was the author of some thirty books on American history.
He married in March 1900 Mary Ritter, who graduated from DePauw in 1897. Mary was born in Indianapolis, and died 14 August 1958 in Phoenix, Arizona. Mrs. Beard collaborated on several history books with her husband, but, she also wrote some fifteen books on her own. She was also an ardent spokesperson of women's rights. In 1936, she proposed a World Center for Women's Archives, a sort of female preserve.
The Beards had a son, William, and a daughter, Mrs. Alfred Vagts.
