Biographical Sketch
Miss Dimmitt had been an educational missionary for the Methodist Church at Isabella Thorburn College, Lucknow, India, for 42 years until her retirement in 1961. She was head of the English department at the Indian college and faculty advisor to its magazine, The Chand Bagh Chronicle. During her teaching career she had contributed numerous articles to church publications and had lectured many times throughout the Midwest while back in the U.S. on furloughs. After she graduated in 1917 from DePauw University, Miss Dimmitt taught English at DePauw during the spring semester of 1920, prior to accepting the appointment in India. She had also studied at Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., 1913-15, and earned a master's degree at Wellesley College. Marjorie Alma Dimmitt died in California on November 18, 1965.
This collection contains in the main letters from Marjorie A. Dimmitt to her parents, sisters and brothers from Indian and while en route to and from India. She gives very vivid descriptions fo the life in India as well as the beautiful Temples and country she walks and cyclys through during her vacations from the Isabella Thoburn College in Lucknow. As she travels froma nd to the United States she visits may other countries which she describes. She was often a visitor in the home of Dr. and Mrs. E. Stanley Jones; her letters often mention Gandhi; Jawaralal Nehur; Nehru's sister, Mrs. Laxmi Pandit and the daughter of Mrs. Pandit-a student at the college.
