Biographical Sketch

Lily Dexter Greene, daughter of William H. Greene and Mary Pence Greene, was born at Hardinsburg, Indiana on August 11, 1868. She received an A.B. from DePauw University in 1893, "took Bible" in the Chicago Training School, and went to India as a missionary in 1894. After serving in Lucknow, Dwarbath, and Budion, she returned briefly to the United States where she received an M.A. from Boston University in 1902. From 1902-1920 she served at Rajputana, Phalera, Cawnpore, and Lahore, returned to the United States in 1920, and received her Ph.D. from Hopkins University in 1922. After returning to Delhi to build a school in 1922, she spent the rest of her life in the Delhi area where she continued her missionary work. Lily Dexter Greene died on February 16, 1942 in India.

Collection Statement

This collection consists mainly of letters arranged in chronological order and articles. There is also a book, Life of Lily D. Greene by Elsie Greene Pickett along with a diary/homeward journal, 1930 from Greece.
