     James Sumner Julian, Jr. followed his older brother, Percy L. Julian '20, to DePauw after graduating from Greencastle High in 1920. A brother and three sisters followed him. Determined to become a doctor and unable to get the precise courses he wanted at DePauw, James transferred to the University of Chicago and was awarded his B.S. there. He subsequently received his M.D. with honors at Howard University in 1934 and began his general practice in nearby Baltimore soon after.
     On May 24, 1970, the 68 year old physician was awarded an honorary bachelor of arts degree from DePauw, becoming the last of the six Julian siblings to receive a DePauw diploma.
     The Julian family used the occasion to announce the establishment of a memorial fund of over $25,000 at DePauw honoring their deceased parents who moved to Greencastle from Montgomery, Alabama in 1918 to see that their children attended DePauw.
