Biographical Sketch

Hazel Day Longden was the daughter of Thomas Grove Day and Rebecca Spendiff Day. She was born on August 16, 1894 in Correct, Indiana. She came to Greencastle in 1912 to attend DePauw University and graduated in 1916 with a strong background in German and Latin. Following graduation, she accepted a position as principal and teacher of German and Latin at Royal Center High School. In the spring of her senior year she had met and began dating Grafton Longden, the son of her major professor Henry Boyer Longden. In 1917, Hazel gave up her teaching career to marry Grafton Longden and they moved into a home on Crow's Bridge Road in Greencastle.

Hazel Day Longden made herself an important part of the community through volunteer activities and generosity in both time and money. She was in demand as a speaker for both college and community events, and through her dedicated service received many citations and awards. Her memberships were numerous in church, civic and cultural organizations including the Putnam County Saddle Club, the Woman's Club, Over the Teacups, United Methodist Women, Girl Scouts of America and the Wabash Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America. She was also the donor of land and facilities for the Putnam County Playhouse.

The Hazel Day Longden Papers consist of manuscripts of speeches, plays, DePauw memorabilia, correspondence, photographs, and club-related material. They are arranged alphabetically by subject.
