Biographical Sketch
In 1851 his parents moved with him to a farm in the rich river bottom just below New
Albany. During each winter he attended the log school near his home for three months. In 1859
he attended the Asbury Female College, as it was called, at New Albany, where he first met the
young woman who was to be his wife. In 1860 he entered Indianan Asbury University at
Greencastle, a cousin, William Poucher, for whom he felt a life-long reverence, making this
possible by generously taking John's place on the farm. Working his way through Indiana
Asbury, he was graduated from that institution in 1865. In the fall of the same year he went to
Garrett Biblical Institute from which he was graduated in 1867. While attending Garrett he
tutored in Northwestern University.
