Biographical Sketch
William S. Stewart was born in October, 1831, in Franklin County, Indiana, the second of
four children of Samuel and Margaret (Earhart) Stewart. William attended college at Indiana
Asbury (now DePauw University) in Greencastle, Indiana, where he was graduated on July 17,
1856. Preserved with his letters are certain papers written during his college years, some being
class assignments and others being compositions apparently for deliverance as speeches before
one of the college literary societies. From 1856 to 1858, William studied law in Cincinnati, in all
probability at the Cincinnati Law School. This is somewhat unusual because, at this time, most
lawyers were prepared for their profession by reading under the supervision of a practicing
lawyer.
