Philip S. Baker taught natural science, English, chemistry and physiology from 1875-1901. The founder of the modern chemistry department, he died while Minshall Laboratory, which he virtually designed, was under construction. It is suspected his premature death was due to poisonous fumes from the poorly ventilated laboratory in the basement of East College.
