Historical Sketch
The Acme history began in 1860 when it was organized by the Rev. Z. B. Ellys as the Pleasant Hill Church. The church was built one half mile west of Acme in 1878. The church burned and in 1890 a new church was built which is the present day Acme Church. In 1939 the church tower was removed because of the new state road. In November 1968 a union was made between the United Brethren and the Methodist churches and the church became the Acme United Methodist Church.
The Freetown history is a combination of two histories, the United Brethren and Methodist Episcopal. The United Brethren and Methodist each had their own church. In 1968 the denomination became one, the United Methodist Church. They worshiped in both buildings until August 9, 1971 when they voted to become one church. The new church built an educational wing.
The Surprise United Methodist Church began in 1890 meeting in a log school house at Gorbett Town. In 1890 the contract was let to build the church. The church burned in 1902. It was rebuilt and worship continued. In 1955 a basement was dug and the building was moved to its new foundation. The church has been on several different charges. They are now part of the Freetown Parish with Acme and Freetown Churches.
The Acme, Freetown and Surprise United Methodist Churches make up the Freetown Parish. These are three separate and unique churches with separate and unique congregations. They each have their own programs and outreaches. The Freetown Church, along with their Sunday School program, have youth groups and Bible School. They also have an active Women's Group and Ladies Aid. The Surprise and Acme Churches work together with their Bible School and Youth groups to supplement their Sunday Schools. The Acme Church also has an active Women's Group. Each church helps to support Missionaries as well as local outreaches to the needy. The men of the three churches combine with a county-wide Men's Group and support many projects. Each church has their own worship, their own people, and their own goals, purpose and way of working together. Even though they are separate churches they combine for many things. The churches meet together for Sunday night services and mid-week Bible study. They are also willing to help work with and support whatever the other churches do or have a need for. The Freetown Parish, although three churches, are one people in their love for and service to Jesus Christ.
