Historical Background

First organized in 1844, the congregation met for the first two years on alternating Sundays in the Bainbridge Presbyterian Church. For the most part, the church's pulpit was supplied by ministerial students from DePauw University. Dr. Hillary A. Gobin began his career as student minister there in 1869. During the 1920's two prominent members of the DePauw faculty served for a time as pastors: Dr. L. R. Echardt and Dr. E. R. Barlett. Rev. Vernon Bigler came to Bainbridge UMC in 1945 as its first full time pastor.
