Historical Sketch

Religious services were conducted in Hamilton County by Methodist Episcopal ministers as early as 1829. These meetings were held in private homes. The Carmel Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1848 with about a dozen members. A Sunday School had been organized earlier and met in a log cabin. In 1850, a house of worship, a frame structure with a belfry was erected. In 1905, the erection of a cement block church building was started. The dedication was held March 4, 1906. A half century later in 1955, plans were begun for a new church home. The first service in this building was November 23, 1958. The church was known as First Methodist Church until October 1968, when it was changed to Carmel United Methodist Church.
