Historical Note
Rev. James Armstrong came to Crawfordsville in 1825 to organize a Methodist class. When
he was denied the use of the Baptist church and the school, he mounted a sugar tree stump to give
his message. As a result five women came forward to form a Methodist class in the village of
Crawfordsville. A warranty deed to lot 160 for church purposes was issued in 1826. A 40'x40'
frame building was erected by 1829. In 1853-54 a campaign was begun for a new church building.
In 1856-57 the new building was finished, but it wasn't dedicated until 1861-62 when it was debt
free. The next church home was dedicated in 1886 and used until the present building was
completed in the mid 1970's.
