Minors for Music Majors
Minors in Music for Students of the College of Liberal Art
The DePauw Jazz Ensemble performs on campus and in concert venues throughout Indiana, including combo performances in a club setting. Top artists regularly visit campus to perform with our ensembles and give master classes. All ensembles, classes, and master classes are open to all students on campus regardless of major. If you are searching for an environment in which you will learn how to play throughout all four years, and where you will graduate with a degree that opens doors, DePauw University and the Jazz Studies Program (an area of concentration leading to a minor) is for you. Recent guest artists include: Bobby Shew, Jamey Aebersold, David Baker, John Fedchock, Lynne Arriale, Steve Davis, David Berkman, Joe Wilder, Mike Longo, Jim Snidero, Bob Mintzer, and Joe Lovano.
The ensemble provides an opportunity for students to learn and apply techniques and concepts necessary to complete work as a working musician. The repertoire is carefully selected to include music of historical importance and important jazz standards. It includes an 18-piece big band performing everything from classic tunes of the 30s to modern fusion.
Jazz combos are small, faculty-led ensembles devoted to the study of standard tunes and developing improvisational skills.
Jazz Theory and Improvisation
Jazz theory and improvisation courses are designed to engender facility and comfort in the performance of jazz idioms.
Jazz history courses enable students to learn about the people and styles of America's unique musical form.
Jazz arranging courses enable students to learn the vocabulary of jazz arranging and gain practical experience. The key instruments of jazz are thoroughly discussed as well as orchestration, form, counter-point, harmony, rhythm, scoring and part-copy.
Jazz studies allows students to learn Jazz Piano, Guitar, or Bass, study improvisation, comping, and reading lead sheets in a private lesson setting.
Students in the College of Liberal Arts who are majoring in disciplines other than music may complete a minor in either applied music or jazz studies. The completion of a successful audition is required before a student can be certified as a minor.
