ENSEMBLE AUDITIONS - FALL 2008

University Band | University Choirs | University Jazz Ensemble | University Orchestra

UNIVERSITY BAND

Auditions for the University Band take place on MONDAY, AUGUST 25 throughout the day. A Sign-up sheet will be available in the Green Center for Performing Arts outside Studio 1116 to enter your name and time (information about signing up will be available when you arrive on campus.)

All students should prepare a work (or works) that demonstrate two styles of musical performance:
1) faster, technical playing
2) slower, expressive playing (for example, a work that you have previously prepared and successfully performed at your state's "Solo & Ensemble" festival would be appropriate).

Also, some sight-reading will be required at the audition, which is generally taken from the repertoire the University Band will be studying and performing during the 2008-2009 academic year.

For more information, contact Dr. Craig Paré, conductor, DePauw University Band, at cpare@depauw.edu.

UNIVERSITY CHORUS AND CHAMBER SINGERS

Auditions for the DePauw Choirs (University Chorus and Chamber Singers) will take place on MONDAY, AUGUST 25 and TUESDAY, AUGUST 26 in Professor Gabriel Crouch's studio (0112) in the Green Center for the Performing Arts.

All students wishing to be placed in a choral ensemble should prepare one piece of music for the audition. Any style of music is acceptable, but the piece selected should give a good indication of the singer's comfortable range, and ability to sing expressively in both loud and soft dynamics. An accompanist will be provided, and candidates should be sure to provide a copy of any accompaniment. A short sight-reading test will also be given.

Please sign up for a convenient audition slot outside Professor Crouch's studio (GCPA 0112) when you arrive on campus. For more details please contact Professor Crouch at gabrielcrouch@depauw.edu.

UNIVERSITY JAZZ ENSEMBLE

Auditions for the University Jazz Ensemble take place on MONDAY, AUGUST 25 for new and transfer students and TUESDAY, AUGUST 26 for returning students.. A Sign-up sheet will be available in the Green Center for Performing Arts outside Studio 0164 to enter your name and time (information about signing up will be available when you arrive on campus.)

All students should prepare a short work (classical or jazz etude, parts of a piece performed at contest, etc.) that will allow evaluation of tone, technique, rhythmic strength, etc. Sight-reading will also be required at the audition. Those students who improvise will be asked to solo over a blues in concert F or Bb or another tune of their own choosing.

For more information, contact Professor Lennie Foy (lfoy@depauw.edu), Director, DePauw University Jazz Ensemble.
