DEPAUW OPERA

Die Fledermaus - 2007
by Johann Strauss, Jr.

Die Fledermaus
Jennifer Smith as Rosalinda, Kyle Aberle as Eisenstein, and Elizabeth Hartnett as Adele
Act I - Evening at the Eisenstein home - The show opens with a serenade by Alfredo, a former lover of Mrs. Rosalinda Eisenstein. Adele, the Eisenstein's chambermaid, gets a letter from sister Fifi urging her to go to a wild party being given by an eccentric Russian prince. Rosalinda, however, refuses to give Adele the night off. Eisenstein appears, complaining about his lawyer's incompetent performance at his trial. He is to go to jail that evening to serve an eight day sentence for his crime of punching a politician.

Dr. Falke arrives and persuades Eisenstein not to report to jail until the morning. Dr. Falke is an old friend who is seeking revenge for a practical joke that Eisenstain had played on him at a costume party thrown by the eccentric Russian Prince Orlofsky. Once rid of her husband, Rosalinda agrees to give Adele the night off and looks forward to a visit from Alfredo. Alfredo arrives and makes himself so comfortable that when Captain Frank (the warden of the prison) arrives to escort Eisenstein to jail, he assumes Alfredo is Rosalinda's husband and escorts the would-be lover to jail in Eisenstein's place.

Act II - Later that evening - At the palace of Prince Orlofsky the party is hopping. Dr. Falke promises to amuse the bored, jaded Russian prince by allowing the Prince to observe (and participate) in his revenge on Eisenstein. Eisenstein appears and is introduced as a French Marquis, followed by Captain Frank who is also introduced as a Frenchman (although it is clear that neither speaks French!) Adele appears and is presented as an up and coming actress: Madame Olga.

Die Fledermaus
Jennifer Smith as Rosalinda (as the Hungarian Countess)
Finally, Rosalinda shows up disguised as a Hungarian countess. The increasingly inebriated Eisenstein flirts with one girl after another, among which is his disguised maid, Adele, before centering his attention on the countess (his wife). The countess manages to take her husband's heirloom watch as evidence of his philandering. As Eisenstein attempts to get it back the clock strikes 6 a.m., reminding both Eisenstein and Warden Frank that they are late for jail. The two intoxicated men stagger out of the party as the curtain falls.

Act III - The next morning - The drunken warden arrives at the jail, very much the worse from all the partying. Adele and her sisters arrive at the jail and ask for his help in launching her stage career. Shortly thereafter, Eisenstein appears to begin serving his sentence. This confuses the warden, and he explains that he personally arrested Eisenstein the evening before as he had an intimate dinner with Rosalinda.

To get to the bottom of the matter, Eisenstein poses as a lawyer, hoping to extract evidence from Alfredo and Rosalinda. He learns far more than he would like, but as he demands revenge, Rosalinda produces Eisenstein's watch and turns the tables. The show ends with mutual forgiveness, and champagne is blamed for everything! Falke gets his revenge on Eisenstein...thus "the revenge of the bat."
