MUSIC OF THE 21ST CENTURY
![]() |
Music of the 21st Century is an annual residency which brings some of the world’s most outstanding composers to DePauw. It provides students and faculty members a special opportunity for personal interaction with these composers, and to study, perform, and share with our audiences the music of our time.
In 2008, we welcome Chen Yi for a residency from February 13-17.
Chen Yi is the Lorena Searcy Cravens/Millsap/Missouri Distinguished Professor of Composition at the Conservatory of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she has taught since 1998.
A native of Guangzhou, China, Chen Yi was the first woman in China to receive the degree of Master of Arts in composition. In 1993 she received her Doctor of Musical Arts with distinction from Columbia University and in 2005, was elected into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Chen Yi’ s music combines Chinese and Western traditions, and transcends cultural and musical boundaries.
