Keynote Address: Melanie Lowe, Vanderbilt University
Melanie Lowe is Associate Professor at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music and Chair of the Department of Musicology and Ethnomusicology. Her research focuses on how music imparts meaning and is made meaningful in both historical and contemporary cultures. At the moment she is writing about music in American presidential politics as well as constructions of difference in 18th-century European music. In spring, 2008 she was the first recipient of the Rev. James Lawson Lectureship at Vanderbilt and used the honorary position to teach about music’s role in the ongoing immigration debate in the United States. Professor Lowe has won several teaching awards, including Vanderbilt’s Madison Sarratt Prize for excellence in undergraduate education and Princeton University’s Graduate Alumni Excellence in Teaching Award.
