DePauw School of Music graduate Julia Johnston ’04 was recently appointed manager of Indy Flute Shop, a new division of Paige’s Music in Indianapolis. Indy Flute Shop opened in June 2008 to fill the demand for a local retailer specializing in flutes.
“Exhibiting at Indiana State University's Flute Fest and the Greater Indianapolis Flute Club's Flute Fair made us realize that there was a high demand for this type of shop in the state,” explains Johnston. “I began researching the brands and models of piccolos, flute, alto and bass flutes to see what we should carry in the shop. We worked with several of our existing manufacturers and made contact with new manufacturers in order to bring in the new inventory.”
Johnston is not only managing Indy Flute Shop but was also largely in the creation of the space. “We already had some space that would work nicely for the shop, but it was in the form of two closets. After the room underwent construction I got to play interior designer and choose the color scheme, furniture, and display units.”
Indy Flute Shop is holding its first event on October 19, 2008 – a master class with flutist Paul Edmund-Davies. For more information visit www.indyfluteshop.com.
