Cleveland JohnsonCleveland Johnson received a Bachelor of Music degree in Organ and Music History from the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and a doctorate in Musicology from Oxford University. His areas of expertise include the keyboard music of the Renaissance and Baroque, historical performance practice, and the music of India. He has studied musicology with Denis Arnold, John Caldwell and Alan Tyson and organ and harpsichord with Fenner Douglas, William Porter, Harold Vogel. Performing widely on historic organs of northern Europe, he has also recorded for Radio Bremen, Récreation Records and Calcante Records.

In India, his work has focused on the Indian harmonium and on the origins of Indian musicology. His has received grant support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Lilly Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Thomas J. Watson Foundation, the American Institute for Indian Studies, and the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdiesnst (Fulbright). Appointed 1985.
