Object of the Week
By: Hayden DeBruler ‘17

Somewhere between Keith Haring and Kirchner, Isiah Miles challenges us with A Game of Chess (acrylic on canvas). His bold pigments hatch across each other in an interpretation of the traditional chessboard, investigating juxtaposition of color. Swirls of blue and green seem to shadow the movement of a hand picking up a knight, taking a rook. Entering a game of chess with the painter himself, the work draws us further to the king, coursing through the aerial scope of a match in the park, paths from each edge leading towards the table in the center, the most meticulously checks in the piece. Garden beds edging in from the corners, the pressure of time, variability in response; Miles works on two levels: the suggested scene of a chess game in the park, and the intimate play with the viewer, cornering us, taking our pieces, and scattering them across his canvas.

Hayden DeBruler is from Greenville, South Carolina. DePauw Class of 2017, Creative Writing and Art History Major. She is a volunteer with the Peeler Art Center Galleries.

A Game of Chess is currently on view at the Peeler Art Center (second floor hallway).
