February 13, 2013
Elisa Villanueva Beard, a 1998 graduate of DePauw University, has been appointed co-CEO of Teach For America. TFA is a national teacher corps of recent college graduates who commit two years to teach and to effect change in under-resourced urban and rural public schools. Villanueva Beard had been serving as the organization's chief operating officer.
A sociology major and Spanish minor at DePauw, she "will share the CEO title with Matt Kramer, the Minneapolis-based TFA president," reports the Houston Chronicle. "(Wendy) Kopp, who in 1990 founded Teach for America, will become the chair of the board of Teach for America as she continues to serve as CEO of Teach for All, an international network of nonprofit organizations that she helped create in 2007 to expand the Teach for America model into other countries."
"For the past five years as I’ve led the development of the global network, I’ve relied significantly on Elisa and Matt, who have my deepest trust and respect," notes Kopp. "Along with the rest of the leadership team, they have been instrumental in shaping our direction and fostering our strong culture. Their conviction in this work, immense capabilities, character, and deep commitment to social justice will allow Teach For America to achieve even greater gains in the coming years."
She adds, "Elisa grew up in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas and developed a passion for our mission as a student at DePauw University ... She excelled as a 1998 corps member in Phoenix and then as the executive director of our program in the Rio Grande Valley. As chief operating officer for the last eight years, she has led Teach For America’s dramatic growth in our regions, where our program plays out and where we raise 80 percent of our funding."
