Carthage Tops Whitewater and Advances to NCAA Second Round

Greencastle, Ind. - In a game which included seven ties and 10 lead changes, Carthage advanced to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship second round with a 74-68 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater.
The Lady Reds improved to 21-7, while the Warhawks finished their season at 22-7. Carthage faces DePauw in Saturday night's 7 p.m. second-round contest after the Tigers defeated Westminster (Mo.), 66-46.
Whitewater held its biggest lead of the game at five points in the opening five minutes of the contest., but Carthage erased that with an 8-0 run. The Lady Reds led by as many as five in the opening half and the teams headed to the intermission tied at 34-34.
Carthage took a 48-39 lead in the first six minutes of the second half, but the Warhawks regained the lead with a 12-0 run over a four-minute stretch.
The Lady Reds eventually extended the gap to 68-60 with 1:40 left after a 9-3 run. Whitewater refused to give in as it closed the lead to 70-68 after Mary Merg hit a three with 23 seconds left. Carthage, however, made its final four free throws to secure the win.
Carthage's Diana Jacklin led all scorers with 23 points, while Allison Groessl added 15 and Cailee Corcoran followed with 11 and a game-high 12 rebounds. Jacklin and Corcoran each dished out four assists and Stephanie Kuzmanic recorded four steals.
Merg paced the Warhawks with 15 followed by Kaitlyn Thill with 13 and Jamie Swanson with 10 along with nine rebounds. Thill added five assists in the loss.
Carthage shot 42.6 percent from the floor and hit 7-of-18 three-pointers, while Whitewater hit 35.9 percent from the floor and 8-of-22 from beyond the arc. The Lady Reds held a 40-37 edge on the boards and blocked seven shots led by Jacklin's three.Back
