DePauw Hosts Denison Tomorrow in NCAC Field Hockey Tournament Title Tilt

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw’s 18-1 field hockey team put its 17-game win streak on the line tomorrow at Noon when it hosts 15-5 Denison University in the finals of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. The winner earns automatic qualification into the NCAA Division III Championship. Fans can follow the action from the links above.
Tickets are available for purchase at the game ($5 adults, $3 children 18 and under) and students at NCAC institution are admitted free with their student ID.
The Tigers are seeded first in the tournament after winning the regular season title with a 14-0 mark, while the Big Red are the second seed after finishing 10-4 in NCAC play.
DePauw defeated Ohio Wesleyan 3-0 in Thursday’s semifinal match, while Denison topped Wooster, 4-1. The Tigers lost to the Big Red in last year’s championship contest in the Tigers’ inaugural year in the conference.
DePauw enters with the best goals against average in Division III at 0.47 and leads the nation with an NCAC record-tying 14 shutouts, while its .947 winning percentage is second in the country. The Tigers' 17-game win streak is an NCAC record and equals the longest in DePauw history and their 18 wins are the most in school history and equal the NCAC mark.
The Tigers have faced the Big Red twice this season. In the first meeting, DePauw took a 1-0 overtime victory in Granville and had a 13-3 advantage in shots and a 12-4 margin in corners. Chelsea Cutler found the back of the cage, unassisted, just 5:43 into the first extra session.
DePauw didn’t wait until overtime to score in their second meeting against Denison as Mary Grady scored her first career goal in the 33rd minute. The Tigers held a 20-0 advantage on shots with eight were on goal.
In just three seasons with DePauw, Ellis has broken career scoring records set 25 years ago and now has 74 goals and 168 points in her three seasons. Her 26 goals this season ranks second in school history behind the record of 32.
With sophomore Maggie Steele tending goal, the DePauw defense has notched an NCAC-record 14 shutouts this season. Steele has 16 saves and has allowed nine goals and her 0.47 goals against average is second in the nation.
Senior Catie Merrick is the leading scorer for the Big Red with 21 goals and adds a team-high nine assists for 51 points. Katie McMahon has 17 goals and seven assists.
Brittany Benson has six shutouts for Denison this season with 102 saves, a saves percentage of 0.810 and a goals against average of 1.20.
