Noted Trombonist & Arranger John Fedchock Teams with DePauw Jazz Ensemble at Tuesday Concert

April 16, 2015

Noted trombonist and Grammy Award-nominated arranger John Fedchock joins the DePauw Jazz Ensemble for a performance on Tuesday, April 21. The program, featuring Fedchock's original compositions, begins at 7:30 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium, located within the Green Center for the Performing Arts.

Fedchock has soloed with many of the world’s most prominent jazz musicians including Woody Herman, Louis Bellson, T.S. Monk and Gerry Mulligan. A distinguished, in-demand studio musician, he has also achieved critical acclaim for his work as a producer and arranger on several recordings, including New York Big Band and On The Edge.

In recognition of his work on the album No Nonsense, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences honored Fedchock with a 2003 Grammy Award nomination for “Best Instrumental Arrangement” for his chart “Caribbean Fire Dance.” His 2007 release, Up & Running, spent eight weeks in jazz radio’s Top Ten, with the New York Times applauding his ensemble, the John Fedchock New York Big Band. His small-group project, “Hit The Bricks,” prompted JazzReview.com to comment on Fedchock’s “incomparable trombone playing, which seems to have no limit, technically or musically.”

For its last concert of the semester, the DePauw Jazz Ensemble also welcomes the Greencastle Middle School Jazz Band, led by student conductors David Gordon ’15, Kevin Smith ’15, Melissa Guerrero ’16 and Matt Skiba ’16. The middle school students will perform beloved standards such as Duke Ellington’s classic “It Don’t Mean A Thing” and Herbie Hancock’s groovy funk number, “Chameleon.”

“It’s going to be a very special evening of jazz at DePauw University on Tuesday,” says Steven Snyder, director of the Jazz Ensemble. “The students and I are very excited to be sharing the stage with a musician of John Fedchock’s caliber and to be able to experience his original compositions and arrangements first-hand, in addition to his incredible trombone playing.”

General admission to the jazz concert is $3; tickets for seniors, children and all students are free. For ticket information and purchases, visit www.depauw.edu/music/tickets or the Green Center box office (Monday through Friday 12–4 and 6–8 p.m. and Sunday noon–8 p.m).

This appearance by John Fedchock has been made possible, in part, through a grant from XO Brass.
