Scott Lockwood '16 Will Conduct Research in New Zealand with Fulbright Award

July 29, 2016

Scott P. Lockwood, a May 2016 graduate of DePauw University, is the recipient of a Fulbright U.S. Student scholarship and will conduct research in New Zealand during the 2016-17 academic year.  His project, "Methane Production and Consumption in Marine Microorganisms," will be conducted at the University of Otago with Drs. Federico Baltar and Sergio Morales.

He becomes the seventh member of the DePauw community to receive a Fulbright award this year. Josiah Q. Rushing, a 2013 graduate of DePauw and now a graduate student at the University of Cincinnati/Percussion Group Cincinnati, will travel to France to study with renowned percussionist Jean Geoffroy at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon (CNSMD). Madeline N. Hawk '16 and Hattie E. Blair '16 will both spend the upcoming academic year teaching English in South Korea with English Teaching Assistantships (ETA) from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Justin Agrelo '13 will use an ETA to teach English in Argentina, while Shelby (Beasley) Guzzetta '14 will teach English in Poland. Eugene Gloria, professor of English, has received a Fulbright Lectureship Award and will be hosted in spring 2017 by Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies at The Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, The Catholic University of the Philippines (UST).

"I propose to research the rate of methane consumption and production along an environmental gradient along with investigating the underlying genetic mechanisms controlling the process," says Lockwood, a biology and mathematics double-major and Rector Scholar at DePauw. "Better understanding of the ocean's carbon cycle can provide knowledge to better combat the pressing matter of climate change."

During his Fulbright experience, Lockwood plans to reach out to the University of Otago community and the people who live in Dunedin, New Zealand, "by seeking out and participating in extracurricular student groups. By spending time with peers, I can become an active part of the community. Through these more intimate interactions I will be able to listen to other's experiences and learn about New Zealand's culture, and share my own story as well."

Lockwood's future plans include earning a Ph.D. in ecology.

"My time in New Zealand will serve as an unparalleled base to propel my education forward," he states. "Having a strong lead entering a doctorate program will only bring me closer to achieving my ultimate goal, to be one of the front-runners in science, pushing the limits of human knowledge."
