Mackenzie Cremeans '14 to Lead Association of Women Geoscientists

August 30, 2017

Mackenzie Cremeans, a 2014 graduate of DePauw University who is now a geology doctoral candidate at the University of Kansas, has been named president-elect by the membership of the Association of Women Geoscientists (AWG). Creamens will begin her term October 1, and will lead the 1,000-member international association as president in 2018-19 and as past president in 2019-20.

Cremeans, who has served as a regional delegate to the AWG's board of directors, says, "I'm honored and excited to work alongside an incredible group of leaders, from the U.S. and around the world, to continue AWG's strong tradition of promoting, encouraging and elevating women and girls."

An environmental geoscience major at DePauw, Cremeans was a Bonner Scholar, a member of the women's lacrosse and track and field teams, and worked on WGRE. She is a Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellow at KU.

"Aside from the inevitable personal growth that comes with being a leader, it's important for graduate students to take leadership positions in professional societies because these societies shape the fields we hope to enter upon graduation," she notes. "Serving as a leader provides opportunities to make great connections with future colleagues and to guide the direction of the field as a whole."
