C-SPAN Vice President to Speak at Watson Forum
November 2, 2000
November 2, 2000, Greencastle, Ind. - The Media Fellows Program welcomes C-SPAN corporate vice-president and chief legal officer Bruce Collins to the Watson Forum Thursday, November 9 at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The program is titled: "Progressing Backwards, the Damage Done to Our Republic Today by the Progressive Movement." Collins' presentation will focus on the premise that many of the changes to our political system brought about during the "progressive movement" during the first part of the twentieth century (direct primaries, direct election of senators, non-partisan elections) have actually diluted and weakened our political process. He will argue that if the core of a successful political system is strong political parties, the "progressive" initiatives have accomplished exactly the opposite.
Collins, who joined C-SPAN as an on-air host and interviewer in 1981, currently servers as a leadership executive of the non-profit cable cooperative. He has been a founding member and director of numerous legal and media-related organizations, including, among others, the Lawyers Communication Network, the Government Relations division of the National Cable Television Association, the Federal Communications Bar Association and the Supreme Court Opinion Network. Collins also writes a regular column for Sports Business Journal and Corporate Legal Times.
The Watson Forum is located in the Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media on the campus of DePauw University. For more information, contact David Bohmer or Chris Newton at (765) 658-4475.
