Grammy Nominee to Perform Free DePauw Concert

February 13, 2001, Greencastle, Ind. - Grammy-nominated flutist, Marco Granados, a native of Venezuela, will perform in concert Friday, February 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Thompson Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center at DePauw University.  Earlier in the day, Granado will give a flute master class at 1 p.m. in Room 152 of the PAC.

Since his 1991 New York debut at Carnegie Hall, Marco Granados' performance highlights have included concerts at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, The 92nd Street Y, the 1999 British Flute Society International Convention in Manchester, the closing ceremonies concert for the National Flute Association in Columbus, Ohio, and his successful London recital debut at Wigmore Hall. Since 1999 Mr. Granados has toured with his own group, Un Mundo, an ensemble dedicated to the mission of bringing the passion and energy of latin American music to the world.  He recently joined the chamber trio Triangulo, which specializes in chamber music from Latin America, and future projects with the trio include a concert at Rutgers University and recording the music of Astor Piazzolla.

Granados attended the Juilliard School of Music and received degrees from The Mannes College of Music and The Manhattan School of Music. In addition,  he has studied with Jean-Pierre Rampal, James Galway and William Bennett.  Mr. Granados teaches privately in New York City.

Mr. Granados will be accompanied on piano by Elena Abend, a native of Venezuela. Her formal music training began at the Purcell School in London and continued at the Juilliard School of Music, where she received her Bachelor and Master degrees. Abend has performed with all the major orchestras of her country,  as well as in solo and chamber music recitals in Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, The Corcoran Gallery, the United Nations, The Pabst Theater, Toulouse Conservatoire, and The Purcell Room in London. She is currently on the piano faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she is a regular guest artist at the New Generations and Piano Chamber Concert Series, and is on the piano faculty at Indiana University's String Academy summer sessions.

Friday night's program, presented by DePauw University's School of Music, will include music by Piazzolla, Muczynski, Guastavino, Acosta, J. S. Bach,  and compositions by Mr. Granados. The concert is free and open to the public.
