Prof. David Herrold's Article Published in British Journal

August 2, 2001

August 2, 2001, Greencastle, Ind. - David W. Herrold, professor of art at DePauw University, has an article published in the Sept./Oct. issue of Ceramic Review, a British journal on ceramics. The article describes construction of a kiln at the University of Wolverhampton during Professor Herrold's recent sabbatical leave there.

Herrold reports, “the kiln design tested an unconventional method of construction that allowed the kiln to be treated as an architectural problem as well as a functional tool. Castable refractory modeled over a foam mold were substituted for the bricks and steel framing of conventional practice. The article also describes a successful experiment using the gas fueled kiln to introduce ashes in a way that reproduces the ash glaze effect of wood burning kilns.”
