The DePauw Nets Six SPJ 'Mark of Excellence' Awards

April 18, 2002, Greencastle, Ind. - The DePauw, birthplace of the Society of Professional Journalists (Sigma Delta Chi), received six awards for excellence, including two first prizes, in SPJ's Region Five competition. Region 5 encompasses a three-state area: Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.

The 2001 competition was open to anyone in enrolled in a college or university in Region 5 and studying for an academic degree in 2001. All entries had to be published or broadcast in 2001. The contest includes work published or broadcast while working as a student intern. In this competition, DePauw University journalists competed head-to-head with students from the largest schools in the region, including Indiana and Northwestern Universities.

Winning first-place awards:

  • for General News Reporting, The DePauw's Michelle Evans, Brandon Sokol, Craig Grieve, Wil Myers, Jessica Schaab and R.J. Talyor
  • for Best Feature Writing, Natalie Seibert

The DePauw finished second in the category Best All-Around, Non-Daily Student Newspaper Published 2 to 4 Days a Week. Third-place awards went to DePauw's Nick Partlow (editorial cartooning); Maggie Doherty, Stan Jastrzebski, Elizabeth Porter (sports column writing); and Scott Weaver, Ryan Slabaugh, Herman Slodowitz, DePauw University (general column writing).

Earlier this month, The DePauw was named Indiana's best college newspaper for the eighth time in the past nine years, one of 27 awards it received from the Indiana Collegiate Press Association (read more here). The newspaper also celebrated its 150th anniversary this month (read more here).

For 28 years, the Society of Professional Journalists has presented the Mark of Excellence Awards honoring the best in student journalism. Judged at the regional and national level, the awards offer 45 categories for print, online, radio and television collegiate journalism. First place winners from Region 5 will now compete at the national level.

National winners will be announced in the Quill, the official magazine of the Society of Professional Journalists and will be honored in the fall at the 2002 SPJ National Convention in Fort Worth, Texas.
