July 22, 2002

July 22, 2002, Greencastle, Ind. - Stephen W. Perkins, M.D., F.A.C.S., a plastic surgeon and past president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery as well as a 1974 graduate of DePauw University, is profiled in the July 2002 issue of Cosmetic Surgery Times. He tells the industry magazine, "I applied to Stanford and the University of Miami -- great places to study marine biology {his initial field of interest] -- and was accepted at both, but then I got a full scholarship offer from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana."

Perkins accepted DePauw's offer, and in his freshman year took a course in human physiology, which changed the course of his studies and his life. "I was enthralled with the human body -- just the fascinating intricate nature of how the systems work with each other, the anatomy. So, I started taking more and more of those kinds of courses. I actually majored in zoology, but entered medical school after my third year in college, and knew from then on I would be a doctor."

Besides his practice, Perkins Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery in Indianapolis, Dr. Perkins also serves as clinical associate professor of otolaryngology (head & neck surgery) in the Indiana University School of Medicine's department of otolaryngology. He says he teaches students, "They have to make their commitment. If they see what they want to do, they need to make that their goal, and not beat around the bush. They can't try to do everything and expect to be excellent at anything. Make the commitment, make the image work, and commit your practice to that goal and it will come much faster."
