Fortune.com Writer Notes Vernon Jordan '57 & DePauw

November 13, 2002

November 13, 2002, Greencastle, Ind. - Fortune.com writer Andy Serner's column today makes reference to DePauw University and one of its prominent alumni. In an item in his "Street Life" column entitled "My Dinner With Vernon (From the department of gratuitous gossip....)," Serner notes, "Dined last night at Ann and Vernon Jordan's house in D.C. An affair of about 20 people. Nothing wrong with that. (By the way, did you know that Vernon went to DePauw University (that would be in Greencastle, Indiana) class of '57.... Dan Quayle was class of '69!-- takes all kinds!) Anyway, Ann and Vern were their charming selves, food and wine was excellent, and so was the company, which included Jack Welch and Suzy Wetlaufer! Jack looked fine, sporting that lime-green tie he wears from time to time. As for Suze, well she warmed up as the evening went on. How could you not with Vernon working his magic? As I left, I saw V. telling her some kind of story and her getting a good yuk out of it. As for me? I barely made a 10:30 train back to NYC."

Vernon Jordan is currently senior managing director of Lazard Frères & Co., and has recently been cited as one of "The Top 50 African Americans On Wall Street" by Black Enterprise magazine and as one of America's most powerful black executives, by Forbes (read more here). Mr. Jordan is also the former president of the National Urban League, served as an adviser to Presidents Clinton and Carter and authored the 2001 memoir Vernon Can Read!.
