Top Athlete Chooses DePauw, Newspaper Writes

May 3, 2003, Greencastle, Ind. - Reid Sakel, a senior at Southridge High School, and described by the Evansville Courier & Press as one of the school's top athletes, will attend DePauw University in the fall, the paper writes. Sakel, "a 6-foot-2, 175-pound guard, was a four-year starter for the Raiders in basketball and completed his prep career as the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,263 points," Tom Collins notes.

The story continues, "Sakel said he received a full academic scholarship from DePauw, a Division III institution located in Greencastle, Indiana. He plans to major in business. DePauw went 18-8 last season. Sakel was a three-time all-Pocket Athletic Conference performer and was selected to the Courier & Press' 10-player all-Southwestern Indiana team as a senior. He helped the Raiders go 16-6 last season while averaging 16.7 points, 4.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds."

The newspaper points out, "In his career, Sakel finished first in free-throw percentage at 93 percent. He also was first in free throws for a career (382), season (114) and game (17). He was second in career free-throw percentage (86.0),career 3-pointers (145) and career games (90). Sakel also was academic all-state in tennis -- his grade-point average is a perfect 4.0 -- and was a PAC champion. He also is the Raiders' starting shortstop in baseball. Kramer was a three-time Most Valuable Player in track. He holds the school record in the 300 intermediate hurdles at 40.54 seconds. He won sectional titles last spring in the 100 and 300 hurdles and was a member of the 400-meter relay. His best high jump is 6-foot-6."
