Southern California's Press-Enterprise Quotes Prof. Jeff McCall '76
October 12, 2003
October 12, 2003, Greencastle, Ind. - A story in today's edition of Southern California's Press-Enterprise, which examines potential conflicts of interest on newspaper boards, includes analysis from Jeffrey McCall, professor of communication arts and sciences at DePauw University. The article looks into the appointment of the chancellor of the University of California-Riverside to the board of directors for the Belo Corp., parent company of the Press-Enterprise. Louise Knott Ahern writes, "France Córdova's election to the board concerned some UCR employees, who feared she would influence news coverage... media ethics experts say campus employee concerns should not come as a shock, because placing Córdova on the board casts doubt on the credibility of the Press-Enterprise whenever it writes about UCR."
The piece continues, "'A publicly financed university is a news-making entity, and the president is obviously a news source,' said Jeffrey McCall, who writes on media ethics... at DePauw University in Indiana. 'Putting her on the corporate board at least raises the possibility that the news judgments being made about the university are no longer fully independent,' McCall said in a phone interview."
