President Bottoms to Deliver Campus-Wide Address January 21

January 15, 2004

January 15, 2004, Greencastle, Ind. - First-year students at DePauw University will hear from DePauw President Robert G. Bottoms, who will deliver an update on the University's efforts to build a responsible community, Wednesday, January 21, at 7 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium of the Performing Arts Center. Last March, in a campus-wide town hall meeting, Dr. Bottoms launched the initiatives, which are aimed at dealing head-on with alcohol abuse and related at-risk behaviors, problems that are issues at DePauw and every college campus across America.

"What we discussed almost a year ago, and what a number of students, administrators, faculty and alumni have been working on ever since, is something that many of these freshman need to hear about in detail," said Bottoms. "With all first-year students on campus for Winter Term, and with the campus quieter than it is during the regular semester, this seems an ideal time to get together and discuss these issues. Our determination to build a responsible community, and create a covenant that future incoming classes will be required to sign and abide by, grows stronger as the work of the various groups moves forward. It's more clear than ever that students want to live in a community that does not accept alcohol problems, but instead identifies them and deals with them and its crucial that every student is part of the dialogue."
