Minneapolis Star Tribune Quotes Prof. Jeff McCall '76
January 18, 2004
January 18, 2004, Greencastle, Ind. - An article in today's Minneapolis Star Tribune, which examines the "turmoil" within the newsroom of television station KSTP, includes analysis from a DePauw University professor of communication arts and sciences. "'There's a myth in the TV news world that they have to dazzle the audience or they won't watch,' said Dr. Jeffrey McCall, who teaches journalism at DePauw University in Indiana. The 'urgent news' format is self-defeating, he said, because it is generally aimed at younger viewers 'who aren't going to sit still to watch the 6 or 10 o'clock news anyway' and alienates older viewers 'who want legitimate news.' "
