John Templeton Foundation Names DePauw to 'Honor Roll' of Character-Building Colleges

April 17, 1997

April 17, 1997, Greencastle, Ind. - The John Templeton Foundation has named DePauw University to its 1997-98 Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges, a designation which recognizes colleges and universities that emphasize character building as an integral part of the college experience.

"One of the primary goals of education is the development of moral character - those habits of heart, mind and spirit that help students know, love and do what is good. Because of DePauw's demonstrated efforts to develop moral character in students, the John Templeton Foundation is pleased to name them to our Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges," said John M. Templeton Jr., M.D., president of the John Templeton Foundation.

All four-year accredited undergraduate institutions in the United States were invited to qualify themselves for participation by submitting an essay that addresses certain character-building criteria. The selection criteria were designed to evaluate the extent to which a college or university:

  • Inspires students to develop and strengthen their moral reasoning skills
  • Encourages spiritual growth and moral values
  • Provides community-building experiences
  • Advocates a drug-free lifestyle
  • Conducts a critical assessment of 6155character-building programs and activities

A total of 135 schools in 42 states were selected to this year's Honor Roll and will be featured in the 1997-98 Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges reference guide which will be available in the fall. The John Templeton Foundation distributes over 65,000 complimentary copies of the guidebook to public libraries, high school guidance counselors and interested parents and students across the United States. Copies are available by calling (800) 245-1285.

"In a free society it is the responsibility of each citizen to be virtuous and to possess strong character. The John Templeton Foundation applauds DePauw for its programs that emphasize character-building. We look forward to collaborating with DePauw as we strive to increase recognition of their outstanding character-building activities," said Templeton.

The John Templeton Foundation was established in 1987 by international investment manager Sir John Marks Templeton. The Foundation is committed to a broad spectrum of activities, including studies, award programs and publications that promote the character development of young people in secondary schools, colleges and universities.
