Professors Barbara Paré and John Clodfelter to Present Wednesday Concert Focusing on German Art Song

October 23, 2004

October 23, 2004, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw University School of Music faculty members Barbara Paré, soprano, and pianist John Clodfelter will join forces for a faculty recital on Wednesday, October 27, at 7:30 p.m. in Thompson Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center. This event, which is free and open to the public, will focus on works by German art song masters like Alban Berg and Karol Szymanowski, but also include accessible contemporary gems by Richard Hundley, Dominick Argento, and Tom Cipullo.

Working together over the past four years, Paré and Clodfelter have developed a close musical partnership. This pairing has been strengthened by their participation in the prestigious Symposium of Nineteenth-Century German Song at the Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, New Jersey. Over the past two summers, this experience has proven particularly beneficial to duo’s interpretation of composers like Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, and Mahler.

The results of these studies will certainly be on display at Wednesday's recital. Focusing on fin-de-siècle German lieder, Paré and Clodfelter will showcase their skill on Alban Berg’s Sieben Frühe Lieder and Karol Szymanowski’s Bunte Lieder. “These pieces are works that are both challenging and beautiful,” says Paré. “We’ve carefully studied them, spending a considerable amount of time and energy getting the works ready for this event.”

Closing the event will be a series of works sure to end the recital on an uplifting note. Of this compositional group, Paré explains, “The last set consists entirely of contemporary American composers and should be particularly audience friendly.” The overall result is an eclectic program that should not be missed.
