Kid's Best Friend Program Featured in the NCAA News
December 10, 2003
The Kid's Best Friend Basketball Camp, established by DePauw women's basketball assistant coach Mary Smith, is featured in the latest issues of the NCAA News.
During each of the last seven summers, Smith has coordinated a basketball day camp for community youth that not only includes basketball instruction but also addresses the issue of pet overpopulation. Campers pay a typical camp tuition while Smith secures sponsors for the camp so that all proceeds directly fund a program in which local pet owners are eligible to receive $20 off the cost of getting their dog or cat spayed or neutered. The camp is the sole source of funds for the spay/neuter project.
Since the inception of the camp, nearly 700 dogs and cats have gone through the program.
