December 29, 2003
DePauw, ranked 19th in Division III, improved to 8-2 on the season and snapped 13th-ranked Hope's 40-game regular season win streak with a 61-53 victory over the Flying Dutch in the Kalamazoo Klassic. Hope dropped to 9-1 on the season and suffered its first regular season defeat since a 58-46 loss to Albion on February 16, 2002.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead, but Hope put together an 8-0 run late in the half to lead by as many as seven on the way to a 22-19 halftime advantage. The Flying Dutch still led by three at 26-23 before DePauw scored eight straight to take a 31-26 lead early in the second half.
That margin reached as many as eight at 37-29 before Hope slowly came back and eventually took a 51-50 lead on Megan Noll's basket with 2:58 left. Tria Yoder hit a layup just 18 seconds later and buried a three-pointer with 1:01 remaining to give the Tigers a 55-51 lead.
Yoder hit five free throws and Lindsay Houin added another in the final 43 seconds to preserve the victory. DePauw limited Hope to 1-of-6 field goal shooting in the final 2:50 and forced two Flying Dutch turnovers.
DePauw's Sarah Zondor led all scorers with 17 including 13 in the second half, while Yoder scored all of her career-high 15 points in the second half to lead the Tigers to their eighth win in the last nine games. Amy Argetsinger hauled down 10 rebounds to lead the Tigers.
Adelynn Vilmann led Hope with 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Bria Ebels added 10 points and Linda Ebels grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.
DePauw shot a season-low 32.4 percent from the floor and only 20.5 percent in the first half, but Hope shot just 38.2 percent from the field. Each team grabbed 42 rebounds. Mandy Harrison dished out a game-high four assists to lead the Tigers.
The Tigers take on Kalamazoo on Tuesday, December 30, at 8 p.m. The live WGRE broadcast is available here.
