DePauw tops Lakeland 56-48 to finish fifth at Clarke Holiday Tournament

DePauw won for the second straight day and claimed fifth place in the Clarke (Iowa) College Holiday Tournament with a 56-48 victory over Lakeland (Wis.) College. The Tigers improved to 7-3, while Lakeland dropped to 5-8.
DePauw fell behind early by as many as 11 points at 15-4, but rallied with a 24-5 run over the final 13 minutes of the first half to take a 28-20 halftime advantage.
The Tigers stretched the lead to as many as 14 in the second half on a couple of occasions with the final coming at 46-32 on Reid Sakel's three-pointer with 9:29 left. The Muskies scored the next seven to start a 13-2 run that closed the gap to three at 48-45 with 3:32 remaining.
Lakeland missed the front end of a pair of one-and-one free throw situations and DePauw hit all eight of its free throws in the final three minutes to put the game away.
Jon Owens led the Tigers with 15 points, while Derek Lawrence chipped in 14. Cory Nickel paced Lakeland with 21 points and Nick Zeck had a game-high eight rebounds. The Muskies outrebounded the Tigers 38-28 and hauled down 16 offensive rebounds.
DePauw shot just 42 percent from the floor for the game after hitting 50 percent in the first half, but held Lakeland to just 35 percent for the contest. The Tigers converted 12 of 13 free throws, while the Muskies made just four of 12. DePauw committed just 11 turnovers in the victory.
The Tigers return to action on Friday, January 2, when they travel to Maryville (Mo.).
