Trumpeter Kirk Garrison Joins DePauw Jazz Ensemble for April 27 Concert

April 22, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - Chicago jazz trumpeter and arranger Kirk Garrison will join the DePauw Jazz Ensemble and director Randy Salman for their spring concert, Wednesday, April 27. Beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium, the concert is free and open to the public. It will feature classic big band charts and contemporary arrangements by Bob Mintzer, Frank Mantooth and more.

A veteran of the Chicago jazz scene, Garrison attended Mankato State University before honing his skills in the United States Air Force Band. After leaving the Air Force in 1992, he completed his masters degree in Jazz Studies at DePaul University. Garrison’s recent performance credits include engagements at the Chicago Jazz Festival and Chicago Blues Festival as well as appearances with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra Brass and the Ravinia Festival Orchestra. He has also appeared with such jazz stalwarts as Louie Bellson, Kenny Burrell, Ron Carter, Kurt Elling, and Herbie Hancock.

In addition, Kirk Garrison is in high demand as a writer and arranger. In this capacity, he has received commissions from DePaul University, Rob Parton’s Jazz Tech Big Band, the Chicago String Ensemble, and the Millar Brass Ensemble at Northwestern University. This side of Garrison’s musical persona will also be on display during his DePauw visit with the jazz ensemble playing Garrison’s own arrangements of Blue Daniel, Where is Love, and Bernie’s Tune.
