Bondi to compete for national singles title on Monday; doubles team falls in quarterfinals

May 22, 2005, Kalamazoo, Mich. - DePauw junior Liz Bondi advanced to the NCAA Division III Singles Championship match after a pair of straight-set victories today.

Bondi defeated Amy Roche of Middlebury by a 6-1, 6-1 score in the quarterfinals and then topped Kristen Raverta of Amherst by a 6-0, 6-1 score in the semifinals.

The tournament's second-seeded Bondi will take on Washington & Lee's Lindsay Hagerman in Monday morning's national championship match at 9 a.m. EDT. Hagerman is seeded number one in the tourney and defeated Amy Staloch of Carnegie Mellon 6-0, 6-2 in today's other semifinal match.

Bondi defeated Emily Applegate of Washington & Lee 6-2, 7-5 in the first round before knocking off Lauren Hom of Gustavus Adolphus 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 16.

Bondi is now 34-2 on the season and has won 20 straight matches. One of her two losses this season came to Hagerman in the finals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III singles final last October. Hagerman won that match by a 6-3, 7-5 score.

Bondi and junior Jill Anderson began play in the 16-team doubles championship yesterday and the third-seeded DePauw duo defeated Erin Hiranga and Jenna Umeno of Redlands 6-4, 6-1. In Sunday's quarterfinals, Bondi and Anderson lost to Applegate and Kristen McClung of Washington & Lee in three sets. The Washington & Lee players won 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Bondi and Anderson closed out the season with a 15-5 record.
