July 10, 2005
July 10, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - Rob Hill '96, band director at Union Pines High School in Cameron, North Carolina, "has been teaching music for five years," notes a profile published in today's edition of the Southern Pines Pilot. "After graduating from DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., with a degree in music education, the Indianapolis native joined the Army and was introduced to North Carolina when he served a stint in the 82nd Airborne Division Band at Fort Bragg. 'That’s where I got a lot of my experience playing the trumpet and marching,' Hill said. 'After my enlistment was up I wanted to get into teaching and I got my start at New Century Middle School.'"
Hill is beginning his third year directing the band, which boasts 130 members. "All the kids are great," he tells the newspaper. "We have a bunch of hardworking kids that are devoted. Preparation for the fall season actually begins halfway through the spring semester. We start holding drum line rehearsals and color guard rehearsals to give them at least some kind of basic foundation before we get to band camp, which is later on this summer. They do it because they want to be successful and they want to sound and look good."
