Summer Baseball Team of Matt Walker '99 Wins Indiana Amateur State Tournament

August 1, 2005

August 1, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - "We were one out away from being eliminated, then we turn around and win the tournament," Matt Walker, DePauw's head baseball coach and 1999 graduate of the University, is quoted in Indiana's Crawfordsville Journal Review. The Crawfordsville Eagles, a semi-pro team that Walker coaches and plays for, won the Indiana Amateur State Tournament yesterday. "It was just an unbelievable effort from the guys," Walker adds of the team he's coached since 1998. "We thought we had a chance to win it all along, even when our backs were against the wall."

The story by Matt Wilson notes, "The Eagles trailed Geneva 2-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning before providing a two-out, three-run rally. Martin doubled in the Eagles' first run. Then DePauw University product [Ryan] Sipe stepped in and nailed a two-run home run over the right field wall to complete the comeback."

Matt Walker says, "It's pretty awesome to be considered the No. 1 team in the state of Indiana, It's something we're certainly proud of. At 25-4, this was by far our best season."
